Students Invited to Study Abroad Among Europe’s Greatest Civil Engineering Wonders

November 17, 2025

Utah State University civil engineering students have the opportunity to study where some of the world's most iconic engineering achievements were born. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering will offer a two-week study abroad program in Italy and Southern France from May 10–23, 2026, combining academics, culture and real-world exploration.

During the Ancient and Modern Civil Engineering study abroad program, participants experience how civil engineering has shaped societies for thousands of years. Students will earn three academic credits in CEE 3330, while exploring engineering marvels such as the Colosseum, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Pont du Gard, Frecciarossa high-speed train and the Canal du Midi.

In addition to technical learning, the program emphasizes cultural immersion and professional networking. Students will experience the vibrant cultures of Rome, Pisa, Avignon and Nice, while connecting with professionals, faculty and peers who share their passion for engineering.

"One of my favorite parts of the study abroad trip was our trip to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill," said Maddie Witte, an engineering student who attended last year's program. "I hadn't realized exactly how much of modern Rome was built on top of the old city until we were there in person and it's absolutely crazy to walk off a regular city street and into ancient ruins, that's just not something you can experience in a lot of places other than Rome itself."

To be eligible, students should have completed at least two years of college coursework. Students who have finished their freshman year may be admitted on a case-by-case basis. Participants must be physically prepared for daily walking and cycling activities.

Applications are due by Dec. 10, 2025. A non-refundable $150 application fee is required. Program costs include the study abroad program fees plus USU tuition. Students are responsible for purchasing their own airfare, and process may vary. Additional details and the application can be found here.
