Title: Becoming a NASA Mission PI: From Lab Research to Spaceflight. Abstract: Serving as a principal investigator is a familiar role for many university faculty, typically centered on laboratory- or field-based research supported by grants and contracts. But what does it take to move that research into space—and to lead an entire NASA mission? Being a NASA mission PI is fundamentally different from managing a traditional research project. In this talk, I will discuss pathways for translating academic research into spaceflight opportunities, the responsibilities and expectations of a mission PI, and the cultural, technical, and organizational challenges unique to NASA missions. The goal is to demystify the process and provide practical insights for researchers interested in taking their science beyond Earth.

Mike's career spans roles as an individual contributor, technology research & developer, systems engineer, program/product manager, and team lead. Some key highlights of his career include expertise in FPGA and electronic design, RADAR and communications signal processing, spacecraft system development, and mission design.

Student Professional Awareness Conference

SPAC is an annual conference for students hosted by USU IEEE. We will have a keynote speaker and many workshops for students to choose from. Topics will include robotics, AI research, FPGAs, microcontrollers, and systems engineering. Students will be able to learn about local engineering companies and talk with their representatives.

Seismic Design Competition
Student Activities
The Seismic Design Competition challenges student teams to design, build, and test a lightweight structure (often made of balsa wood) that can withstand simulated earthquake forces. It gives participants hands-on experience in earthquake engineering, structural analysis, and the importance of resilient design. The competition will be held in Portland, Oregon.
