Graduate Student Resident Tuition on Sponsored Projects

When submitting a proposal through Kuali that includes funding for Graduate Student Salary, funds for resident tuition must also be included in the budget. If the sponsor or RFP specifically prohibits tuition and fees, a note should be added in Kuali to document why no tuition and fee funds are included in the budget.

The required amount of resident tuition funding in the budget depends upon the total dollar amount of the proposal. The minimum amount can be pro-rated when project periods do not cover the full year or the graduate student is not budgeted full time on the project. The minimum amount required is based on 6 credits of resident tuition using the 2021-2022 tuition schedule plus inflation of 5%.

Table 1 details the minimum resident tuition budget required for each graduate student based on the size of the proposal. For proposals under $10,000, no tuition and fee budget will be required. If the project is awarded, the budgeted resident tuition funds will be applied to the student’s account before the College of Engineering resident tuition waiver will be applied.

**This will be budgeted as Tuition and Fees in Kuali. Kuali will use an inflation rate of 5% so you will need to manually adjust Kuali if you opt to include this in the budget. Paying the student portion of insurance is optional. The department portion of health insurance will still need to be budgeted in Kuali as Student Health Insurance. Please reference this page for additional details related to graduate student health insurance.
