The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering prepares future leaders who pioneer solutions for a stronger, safer, and more sustainable built environment. If you’re ready to advance your career and become an engineering expert, a graduate degree in civil & environmental engineering is your next step. Students can specialize in one of five emphasis areas, including environmental, geotechnical, structural, transportation, or water resources engineering.

Degrees Offered
Master of Science (MS) in Civil & Environmental Engineering
- Plan A: Coursework plus thesis. Designed for students considering a PhD or career path that requires research experience.
- Plan B: Coursework plus research report. Prepares students to become engineering experts with a strong foundation in evidence-based design.
Master of Engineering (ME) in Civil & Environmental Engineering
No thesis required. Designed to improve your technical knowledge with an emphasis on professional practice. Can be completed in two semesters of intensive study.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Civil & Environmental Engineering
The PhD is a research-intensive program for students pursuing advanced leadership roles or who plan to teach engineering at 4-year colleges and universities. A master’s degree is required for admission to the doctoral program.
