USU Civil & Environmental Engineering Department to Host Career Night

Utah State University’s Civil and Environmental Engineering Department will host its annual Career Night dedicated to connecting students with potential employers and allowing them to build networks. Between 40 and 50 companies, agencies and institutions are slated to attend.

The event will take place Tuesday, Nov. 15 from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the TSC ballroom. A light dinner will be served and all CEE students are invited and encouraged to attend.

The evening is typically mostly aimed at junior and senior undergraduates and graduate students, although first-year and sophomore undergraduate students are also invited. Students attending may be pursuing internships, career positions or simply may be interested in discussing general career advice to gain a better understanding of the breadth of the industry.

“Companies come ready to offer internships and jobs,” said Shelby McKenna, a staff assistant for the department. “I think it is an excellent opportunity for students to get their foot in the door with many big companies.”

Professor of Practice Austin Ball, who also assists with the event and works for the department, echoed McKenna’s thoughts. His role is to encourage students, employers and connections to participate in Career Night.

“I enjoy being part of organizing the event because I get to re-connect with many former students and colleagues, but most importantly I get to connect students to opportunities that they may not have had otherwise,” he said.

Ball also follows up with employers to take suggestions for future changes to the event as well as additional opportunities for the students.

Between 150 and 200 students and professionals attended the virtual Career Night in 2021 and the department anticipates a great turnout for 2022.
