‘Father of DSL’ to Speak at Annual College of Engineering Research Week Awards Ceremony

News Release — April 12, 2022 — The Utah State University College of Engineering is excited to welcome Dr. John M. Cioffi as the guest speaker for the college’s annual Research Week Awards Ceremony on April 14.

Cioffi is an electrical engineer, educator, and inventor who has made transformative contributions to telecommunication system theory. He is best known as “the father of DSL,” because his pioneering research was instrumental in making digital subscriber line, or DSL, a practical technology.

His career started with Bell Lab and IBM where he worked as an electrical engineer from 1978-86. In 1986, he joined Stanford University as an assistant professor. He was later promoted to associate professor, full professor, and most recently appointed as a recalled emeritus professor.

Cioffi has published over 800 papers and holds more than 150 heavily licensed patents. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and a fellow at the U.K. Royal Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, or IEEE.

He is the recipient of the IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal, IEEE Third Millennium Medal, IEEE Leon K. Kirchmayer Award, and the IEEE Armstrong Communications Award. He has been inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame and the Consumer Technology Association Hall of Fame.

In 1996, Cioffi was named an IEEE fellow; and in 2006 he was named a fellow of The Marconi Society. Cioffi was the Founder of Amati, which was purchased by Texas Instruments in 1997. Today he is chairman and CEO of ASSIA Inc. He has served on more than a dozen boards of directors and is currently the chairman of PHYTunes. He earned a BS in electrical engineering from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a PhD in electrical engineering from Stanford University.

The awards ceremony is on Thursday, April 14 at the Skyroom Restaurant. A reception with heavy hors d'oeuvres will be held from noon to 1 p.m. The awards ceremony will be from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend. RSVP here.
