ECE Department Creates New Student Study Space

April 26, 2021 Students in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering can now access a newly remodeled facility created just for them.

The 750-square-foot student space inside the Peterson Engineering Labs building features comfortable new study areas with large tables, private cubby chairs with integrated power outlets, floor-to-ceiling white boards, lounge chairs, and new lighting. Additional features include all-new heating and air conditioning equipment, in-floor power outlets, and an 85-inch screen for presentations or the occasional video game tournament.

“We wanted to create a desirable space in this building where students can work individually or in groups,” said Department Head Jake Gunther. “We wanted it to be comfortable and relaxing while at the same time sending the message that this is a space for work and study.”

Gunther says the new facility addresses a major concern in the department: students need comfortable study environments with plenty of natural light.

“With only one exception, all the labs in this building have no windows or natural light,” said Gunther. “This new space features large windows that flood the room with daylight.”

Gunther says a lot of planning went into the new space.

“Students told us they wanted abundant access to power for their laptops and other devices, and we addressed that here,” he said. “They also asked for white boards, so we installed floor-to-ceiling boards in multiple locations. There will be no shortage of white board space for anyone who wants to use it.”
