Our diversified research group thrives on advancing inclusion, excellence, diversity in research, teaching, and service. In our group, all members are granted equal access to knowledge, apprenticeships, and chances of advancement. Our group enjoys working with people from different backgrounds and is always open to new voices and ideas.
- Dr. Ouyang and his group hosted a session on Saturday Dec 6, 2025 for the Science Bound program in Ames lab. He demonstrated the deformation of metals and especially shape memory alloy for a total of 130 students in the 8th grade from Denison, Des Moines, Marshalltown and Osceola for the science bound program.
(The goal of Science Bound is to support students from pre-college through college to increase the number of racially and ethnically minoritized Iowa youth who pursue degrees and careers in the fields of agriculture, science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Students begin the nine-year program during the summer before 8th grade and continue through to college graduation.)

- Dr. Ouyang hosted two SULI students in the summer of 2025: Samual Crowley from University of Connecticut and William Enrlich from Kenyon College working on Al-Ce-Mg-Zr alloy and Fe-Si-P alloys.
(The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) program encourages undergraduate students and recent graduates to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. Selected students participate as interns appointed at one of 17 participating DOE laboratories/facilities. They perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission.)

- Dr. Ouyang hosted a SULI student Jackson Berlage coming from Gustavus Adolphus College in the summer of 2023 working on combinatory arc synthesis of Al-Ce-X alloy.

- On June 15, 2023, Dr. Ouyang hosted a 50-minute demonstration or hands-on activities on metals for 8th graders for the ISU TRIO program.
(The TRIO program provides outreach and support programs to disadvantaged students in middle school to the post-baccalaureate level.)
- On August 18, 2022, Dr. Ouyang volunteered at the Iowa State Fair representing Ameslab team. He introduced Ameslab’s newest technology in energy saving and renewable energy for local Iowans.
