Set Four
Civil Structure Repair/Reinforcement
The earthquake has caused large-scale damage on Cache Valley’s infrastructure: homes are destroyed, roadways are impassable for most vehicles, and the newly-zombified residents pose a constant threat to unprotected communities. Priority lies in ensuring the safety of the population, who need shelters built quickly and efficiently from both the elements and the undead. These shelters must not only be quickly constructed but also reinforced for safety and designed for easy evacuation. Finally, roads must be reconstructed to ensure easy access to key parts of town without congestion typical of large-scale traffic. We need innovative, durable housing solutions that can be built swiftly and easily evacuated alongside redesigned roadways that prioritize constant movement and accessibility throughout the valley.
Requirements:
The proposed solution(s) shall:
- R.1. Detail housing structures that can accommodate and easily evacuate 5-10 families.
- R.2. Present roadway designs that allow commuters to access anywhere in a “hub city” within 10 minutes without stopping.
Goals:
The proposed solution(s) may:
- G.1. Have housing structures that can be constructed in one week.
- G.2. Include a roadway design that leverages current infrastructure.
Water Purification/Allocation
Amongst uncertainties in the “Little Valley of Horrors” is debate about water: is it safe and how should it be allocated? As engineers gather information on the virus, it's clear that new purification systems are necessary to safeguard water for Cache Valley residents. Additionally, with shifting food demands, it's crucial to address water allocation and specify usage by residents. We need a water purification plan to prevent spread of the virus through water and guidelines for allocating water among farmers, residents, and other stakeholders.
Requirements:
The proposed solution(s) shall:
- R.1. Include water purification technologies that can be leveraged as more information is detailed about the virus.
- R.2. Present a water allocation plan including all stakeholders in Cache Valley.
Goals:
The proposed solution(s) may:
- G.1. Include a cost-benefit analysis of water purification technologies.
- G.2. Include additional water collection methodologies to improve Cache Valley water sustainability.
