Hydraulic Fracing Waste - Produce Water

The wastewater from hydraulic fracturing is highly toxic, and there isn’t currently a sustainable treatment method for this waste; most of it is volatilized into the atmosphere.

SWBEC is looking at ways of harmlessly metabolizing these toxins into biological form, so we can dispose of them in safer ways and even repurpose some of these metabolites into useful bioproducts.

We are currently working with two natural gas fracturing companies that have a presence in Utah. One of these companies is funding an experimental station, to be built on their premises, to aid us in innovating their current treatment processes. The other is collaborating by allowing us to experiment with their wastewater. We are implementing the RABR technology at these stations, looking at the growth of both algae and cyanobacteria for a larger variety of high value products.
