Prospective Students
Thank you for your interest in the graduate programs offered by the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering department. Our programs are designed to prepare students for careers in industry, national laboratories, and academia. The MAE faculty conduct research in all areas of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and teach more than 40 graduate level courses. The MAE department offers coursework, project, and research-based degrees in four areas. Catalog links below provide detailed admission and program requirements.
Students accepted to a program are high-performing and self-motivated students with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or closely related discipline.
Admission for students from closely related disciplines is contingent upon the remedial/prerequisite coursework needed. Students that do not have the minimum GPA or require excessive remedial coursework are required to obtain a second bachelor’s degree prior to consideration.
Research Advising
Students interested in project (MS.B) and research-based (MS.A and PhD) programs should contact faculty members in their technical area of interest to discuss potential advisement and funding early in the application process. Funding for research assistants is determined solely by the major professor (research adviser). PhD students are eligible for funding as teaching assistants at the recommendation of the major professor. For these reasons, it is rare for students to be admitted to the MS.B, MS.A, and PhD programs without a professor agreeing to serve as major professor. Admission does not guarantee financial assistance.
Application Deadlines and Fees
Applications are welcome any time. For admission in a fall semester, the recommended deadline is February 15. For admission in a spring semester, the recommended deadline is Aug 31. International students should apply as early as possible.
Students cannot apply for application fee waivers. Only a major professor can apply for an application fee waiver on behalf of their student.
