USU Alumnus Named 2025 Federal Engineer of the Year
Utah State University alumnus, Major Brigham Moore, Ph.D., P.E., PMP, a deputy squadron commander in the U.S. Air Force, was named the 2025 Federal Engineer of the Year by the National Society of Professional Engineers. Major Moore was recognized at an awards luncheon on Friday, February 21, 2025, at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

Throughout his 15-year career, Major Moore has held several important roles, including civil engineer, chief of programs, chief of operations engineering, and currently, deputy commander of the 51st Civil Engineer Squadron. Moore holds a bachelor's degree in environmental engineering from USU, a master's in civil engineering from the University of Alaska Anchorage, and a Ph.D. in systems engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology.
He has led multiple high-impact projects and teams, including overseeing military construction projects and developing innovative solutions to improve military readiness. Moore’s efforts in optimizing airfield recovery, mitigating explosive hazards, and enhancing engineering operations have significantly advanced U.S. defense capabilities. He has also contributed to community service and STEM education.
A recent accomplishment of Moore’s includes overseeing a $42 million military construction project in 2024, aimed at reducing carcinogenic exposure to industrial chemicals and providing corrosion control for $1.5 billion in aircraft assets. The project had been previously deemed a failure and was nearly canceled when Moore took charge. He developed an innovative design solution and brought in commercial sector experts, rescuing the project and realigning it to deliver a key capability.
Moore’s selection emphasizes his strong leadership and unwavering dedication to achieving engineering excellence within federal service.
The National Society of Professional Engineers supports over 500,000 engineers, ensuring that engineering decisions are made by qualified, ethical professionals. Through education, licensure advocacy, leadership training and networking, NSPE promotes the image and practice of engineering.
