Engineering Faculty Honored at University-Wide Award Ceremony

Two faculty members from the College of Engineering were recognized with university-level awards at Utah State University's fifth-annual faculty awards ceremony on March 26.

Shelly Stock Halling, Faculty University Service Award

Halling is a senior lecturer in the Engineering Education Department where she teaches technical writing for engineers. She also serves as the co-director of the Engineering Writing Center and is actively involved in the University Faculty Senate, the Faculty Senate Executive Committee, the Faculty Evaluation Committee and the Academic Freedom and Tenure Committee. Halling has played a key role in addressing childcare issues for faculty members as a member of the Joint Taskforce with the Staff Employee Association. Additionally, she has served as an adjudicator for undergraduate poster sessions, reviewing student conference papers, and supporting student sections of the Society of Women Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers.

Brady Cox, Faculty Researcher of the Year Award

Cox is the founding director of the newly established Utah Earthquake Engineering Center and a professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. He specializes in seismic design for major civil infrastructure projects and critical nuclear facilities. His research combines experimental field testing with computational analyses for subsurface imaging and seismic wave propagation simulations. He has led teams to collect seismic site characterization data following significant earthquakes worldwide.

Cox is a recipient of the Faculty Early Career Development award from the U.S. National Science Foundation and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, which he received in a ceremony at The White House from President Barack Obama. He has authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications and taught eight different courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels across three universities. Before joining USU, Cox served as a faculty member at The University of Texas for eight years and the University of Arkansas for six years.

In addition to the two award recipients, the College of Engineering had five faculty members nominated for university awards:

  • Mohsen Zaker Esteghamati, Undergraduate Faculty Mentor of the Year Award, Civil & Environmental Engineering
  • Ning Fang, D. Wynne Thorne Career Research Award, Engineering Education
  • Zac Humes, Eldon J. Gardner Teacher of the Year Award, Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering
  • Zhen Zhang, Undergraduate Research Faculty Mentor of the Year, Electrical & Computer Engineering
