Nominate a Graduate Mentor of the Year

Submission Deadline: December 13, 2019 (When department nominations need to go to the College)

Nomination Procedures:

The Outstanding Graduate Mentor of the Year is intended to recognize faculty with a significant record of cumulative accomplishment focused on graduate mentorship. Nominations for this award occur at the department level.

Criteria

  • The Graduate Mentor must be a current employee of USU or have retired within the past 12 months prior to submission.

Submission Materials

  • Name and A-Number of nominee.
  • Nominee's Department
  • 200-word bio of the nominee.
  • One-page description of excellent mentoring. Include what types of activities would be expected in this field and the significance of job placement after graduation. (file upload)
  • Curriculum vitae of the nominee in standard format including a complete list of publications, awards, sponsored projects, and other recognitions by peers - international, national and regional. (file upload)
  • A list of nominee’s past graduates and their current positions/activities (no page limit). (file upload)
  • A cumulative list of nominee’s publications/ presentations/ exhibitions/ awards with graduate students. (file upload)

Process

  • Departments will utilize a department-specific process of selection.
  • Department Heads will fill out the online form to submit one nominee for consideration.
  • A committee appointed by the Dean will review nominees and recommend an individual for the College of Engineering Outstanding Graduate Mentor of the Year Award. (If nominee is selected as the College Recipient, the Dean’s Office will work with the nominee and their department head to complete the packet to be turned in for Robins Award consideration.)

Recognition

Recipient will be recognized at the College of Engineering Research Award ceremony held during USU Research week.

Nominate an Undergraduate Research Mentor of the Year

Submission Deadline: December 13, 2019 (When department nominations need to go to the College)

Nomination Procedures:

The College of Engineering seeks nominations of faculty from the departments for College Undergraduate Research Mentors of the Year. (Submissions can only be made by the college department heads).

Criteria

  • The faculty awardee must be a current employee of USU or have retired within the past 12 months prior to submission.
  • The faculty awardee must be the newly selected College Undergraduate Research Mentor of the Year for this college.

Submission Materials

  • Name and A # of nominee
  • 200-word bio of the nominee
  • Names of undergraduate researchers mentored and corresponding research emphasis (file upload)
  • Publications and/or presentations developed from student mentoring (file upload)

Process

  • Departments will conduct department specific processes to select their Undergraduate Research Mentors of the Year Awardee.
  • Department Heads will complete the online form to submit one name for consideration for College Undergraduate Research Mentor of the Year.

Recognition

  • Recipient will be recognized at the College of Engineering Research Award ceremony held during USU Research week.

Nominate a Researcher of the Year

Submission Deadline: December 13, 2019 (When department nominations need to go to the College)

Nomination Procedures:

The College of Engineering seeks nominations from the departments for outstanding faculty to be considered for College Faculty Researcher of the Year, which recognizes excellence in research, scholarship or creative activity over a limited and recent period of time (past three years). (Submissions can only be made by the department heads). All department Researchers of the Year should be submitted to be part of the selection pool from which one will be chosen as the College Researcher of the Year.

Criteria

  • The faculty nominee must be a current employee of USU or have retired within the past 12 months prior to submission.
  • The faculty nominee must be the newly-selected College Researcher of the Year for this college.

Submission Materials

  • Name and A-Number of nominee
  • Curriculum vitae of the nominee in standard format including a complete list of publications, awards, sponsored projects, and other recognitions by peers - international, national and regional.
  • The following information must be easily identified in the submitted Curriculum vitae or it must be submitted as separate lists:
    • A list of honors and awards indicating recognition of the nominee’s research, scholarship or creative activity at the national or international level over the past 3 years. 
    • A list of research, scholarship or creative publications for the past 3 years. This list should clearly denote graduate and undergraduate coauthors.
    • A list of off-campus participation in research, scholarship or creative works for the past 3 years (e.g. invited seminars, conference presentations, performances). This list should also clearly denote graduate and undergraduate coauthors.
    • A list of all extramural support that has been secured over the past 3 years, with outcomes (if known).
    • A list of the names of completed MS and PhD students, and undergraduate researchers mentored over the past 3 years.
  • 200-word bio of the nominee

Process

  • Department Heads will fill out the online form to submit one nominee for consideration.
  • A committee appointed by the Dean will review nominees and recommend an individual for the College Faculty Researcher of the Year Award.

Recognition

  • Recipient will be recognized at the College of Engineering Research Award ceremony held during USU Research Week.
  • Recipient will receive $500 in account held in the Dean’s Office to use for travel, books, equipment, or other professional development needs.

Nominate an Undergraduate Faculty Advisor of the Year

Submission Deadline: December 13, 2019 (When department nominations need to go to the College)

Award Information:

The Undergraduate Faculty Advisor of the Year Award is given each year to recognize and emphasize excellence in academic advising. Other teaching and scholarly activities may become a consideration in the selection process, but the main emphasis will be on excellence in academic advising as judged by faculty and students.

The dean is to appoint a committee with students, faculty, and administrative representation to select an outstanding advisor from the college. The Faculty Evaluation Committee then selects a "Faculty Advisor of the Year" from the eight college level nominees. The recipient of this award will be announced and recognized at the annual Robins Awards on Saturday, April 16, 2016. The recipient receives a $1,000 award.

Criteria:

The following criteria for selection of the nominees are recommended:

  • The nominee should be serving in a full-time faculty position. Staff members who work as full-time advisors should not be nominated.
  • Availability to advisees.
  • Frequency of contact with advisees.
  • Monitoring of student progress toward academic and career goals.
  • Mastery of institutional regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Number of students assigned for advising purposes.
  • Evidence of involvement in student clubs, organizations, or leadership development.
  • Because so many individuals are potentially deserving of the Undergraduate Faculty Advisor of the Year Award, past recipients will not be considered.

Nomination Materials

  • A 1-2 page statement from the candidate summarizing his or her objectives as an advisor, how these objectives are met, and the number and type of students advised per annum.
  • A 1-2 page letter from the department head explaining the candidate's role and impact as an advisor.
  • Evidence of extracurricular advising (clubs, etc.).
  • The number of students advised per annum.
  • A short biography (2 paragraph maximum).

  • Department Heads will fill out the online form to submit one nominee for consideration.
  • A committee appointed by the Dean will review nominees and recommend an individual for the College Faculty Advisor of the Year Award.

Recognition

Recipient will receive $500 in account held in the Dean’s Office to use for travel, books, equipment, or other professional development needs.

Nominate an Eldon J. Gardner Teacher of the Year

Submission Deadline: December 13, 2019 (When department nominations need to go to the College)

The Eldon J. Gardner Teacher of the Year Award is given each year to recognize and emphasize excellence in teaching. Other scholarly activity such as research and publication records may be considered in the selection process, but the main emphasis will be on teaching excellence as judged by faculty and students. The dean is to appoint a committee with students, faculty, and administrative representation to select an outstanding teacher from the college. The Faculty Evaluation Committee then selects the "Eldon J. Gardner Teacher of the Year" from the eight college-level nominees. This person is recognized at the annual Robins Award and receives a $2,000 award.

Criteria

The following criteria for selection of the nominees are recommended:

  • Excellence in teaching for at least three years as supported by standard university course evaluations and letters from peers.
  • The inclusion of other evidence of teaching excellence in addition to course evaluations and letters from peers.
  • Responsibility for a minimum of a six-credit annual assignment including at least one undergraduate course.
  • Evidence of creative teaching innovation.

Because so many individuals are potentially deserving of the Eldon J. Gardner Teacher of the Year Award, past recipients will not be considered.

Nominate a University Service Award Recipient

Submission Deadline: December 13, 2019 (When department nominations need to go to the College)


The Faculty University Service Award is awarded each year to recognize and emphasize excellence in service to the operations and governance of the University. Recognized activities will include service at the University, College and/or Department levels and may include Libraries and USU Extension. Examples include:

  • Service on one or more of the standing or ad hoc committees of the Faculty Senate or on other councils, committees, and/or task forces addressing specific university issues and initiatives;
  • Service on Department, College, or University-level committees;
  • Service on search committees or promotion/tenure committees;
  • Other activities performed in service to the University.

The award is not intended to recognize service to a professional organization or community outside USU.

The University awardee will be selected from the pool of College awardees that are chosen annually by each of the eight academic colleges (including RCDE campuses), USU Extension, and Libraries. The Faculty Evaluation Committee (FEC) of the Faculty Senate will oversee the selection of the University awardee.

The Faculty University Service Award will be announced at the annual Robins Awards and recognized at the Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony. The recipient of the award will be given a prize of $1,000.

Criteria

Nominees must be full-time faculty members (tenure-track, tenured, or term appointments) without administrative role statements. Because so many individuals are potentially deserving of this award, past recipients will not be considered, nor will current, recent (within 3 years of serving) Faculty Senate presidents. The following criteria for selection of the nominees shall apply:

  1. Excellence in institutional service over at least three years as supported by letters from peers and other evidence.
  2. Evidence of effective leadership while involved in service activities.
  3. Evidence of outstanding quality, innovation, and impact in service activities.

Nomination Materials

In order to provide greater uniformity in the nomination materials provided to the Committee, the following must be prepared, with a maximum of 16 pages total length, approximately 12 pt. font. Materials must be submitted via the Box Widget below.

  1. A statement from the nominee summarizing his or her activities in institutional service over at least the last three years (2 pages maximum).
  2. A short CV that emphasizes service roles and leadership in University service (3 pages maximum)
  3. Letters of support from peers who are familiar with the candidate’s institutional service (maximum of five letters of no more than 2 pages each).
  4. A short biography (2 paragraph maximum).
  5. A professional portrait.
