Day 2 activities

50 in 1 Electronic Kit:

The students received 50 in 1 electronic kits (which they get to keep) and followed instructions about how to build various kinds of electronic circuits. Professors and engineering students supervised and helped the students with any questions or difficulties they may have. Students enjoyed this activity and one of them commented on it in their daily journal saying: "I liked the electric playfield, its crazy we get to keep it!"

The students received an introduction into electromagnetism then proceeded to the following two activites under the supervision of professors and engineering students:

Paper Plate Speaker:

Using the principles of electromagnetism, the students used a paper plate, wires, glue and paper to create a basic speaker and then each of them tested their speaker to see if it can play music. The students enjoyed the activity a great deal and wrote about it in their journals. Sample quotes from the students included: "I learned how to make a paper speaker, how magnets and sound correlate with each other and how a circuit works." Another student said: "Paper speaker, I found it mind blowing that you could make something so incredible out of wire and paper." Another student said: "Using paper plates to amplify music showed me how different things can be than you think."

Magnetic Cannon:

Using the principles of electromagnetism, the students used a straw, wires and glue to create a basic magnetic cannon that shoots a small projectile at a relatively slow speed. Each of the students tested their launcher to see if it can shoot out the small projectile. The students enjoyed the activity a lot and wrote about it in their journals. Sample quotes from the students included: "I would tell my friends about how I made a gun with a straw and made a speaker with a plate." Another student learned that you need to be precise in engineering: "Magnetic cannon, engineering without precision usually fails." Another student said: "Magnet cannons are hard but fun to make."

At the end of the day, students wrote their reflections for the day, and some of their comments included "The speaker made me realize how fun STEM could be." Another student said "The circuit boards, I think I want to do that and study more!".
