Day 3 activities

The students were split into groups and each group did two of the activities listed below.

Sea Perch Submarines:

The students took the ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles) to the 1st dam reservoir at the Logan river and then used remote controllers to maneuver the submarines in the water, collected water samples, gathered a variety of data and took underwater videos using Go Pro cameras. Some of the students commented on this activity with one saying "It was fantastic! I loved going to the dam and doing all of the different activities. The ROV's were super cool." and "Today at camp, we got to play with ROV's and got see under the river and see fish." Another student was thinking of how to improve the activity saying "It got me thinking about how to make taking the samples easier and how to make controlling the subs easier."

GIS Stream Data:

The students went to the USU water lab to gather data about the stream there. The students checked water depth and water flow at multiple depths. They also measured some water properties. One of the students wrote in the journal about this activity saying: "I actually enjoyed doing the velocity testing."

Air Quality/Drones:

The students learned about air quality and methods of measuring that. They then assembled a simple sensor that tells them the quality of the air based on the color of the LED light that gets activated by the pollutant particles in the air. They also observed as a drone carrying more advanced sensors was flown over the quad area at USU to measure air quality there. One of the students commented: "We leaned when/if air is good and if it has pollution."

Flying Aggies:

The students learned about the use of drones in agriculture and how the images drones capture can provide valuable information about what steps farmers can take to improve their fields. One of the students commented about this activity saying: "We looked at fields with a camera and found what the farmers where doing wrong and what they could do better." At the end of the day one of the students wrote in her journal: "Doing the submarines and taking the ph measurements was what interested me the most. It just made me curious about jobs in engineering." And another one said: "The water activities and how much they are affected by the environment makes me interested in environmental engineering."
