New Efficient Window-opening Thermostat (NEWT)

Project

Inefficient normal thermostats don’t use natural heating and cooling. We want to:

  • Save consumers money
  • Be more environmentally friendly
  • Require minimal user effort

We know that energy is wasted heating and cooling homes when it would be much simpler to just open a window.

Methods

To address the problem of more efficiently adjusting the interior climate of a home, we decided that three components were necessary

  • The STM handles user input and the decisions of how and when to heat or cool a home.
  • The OSM measures current weather conditions outside and reports those measurements back to the STM.
  • The WM is responsible for opening and closing the physical windows and blinds of a certain window within the home. It receives commands to do so from the STM.
