Purpose

To provide an intermediate storage option for firearm owners that is portable and accessible.
  • 505 accidental firearm deaths in 2013
  • Many of these are preventable by better storage solutions
  • Many gun owners are in search of a more accessible storage option.
  • This is NOT a perfect solution to firearm storage.
  • Other methods are still needed for complete security.

System

Methods

  • The Biometric Trigger Lock is a system that clamps around a firearm’s trigger guard as shown:
    firearm with biometric trigger lock
  • An aluminum housing was used to hold all the components and cover the trigger guard.
  • TTL serial fingerprint scanner stores prints and checks them.
  • 12V solenoid lock to unlock the system

Conclusion

A fingerprint trigger lock is absolutely a viable option for firearm storage.
  • More research would need to be done in order to find the best method to secure the system to the firearm’s trigger guard.
  • System responds and unlocks in about 1 second, making it a very accessible system.
  • With more refinement, the system could be a marketable option
  • Relatively high-current batteries are needed to actuate a solenoid lock properly.
  • The design can be refined and marketed to firearms or security businesses.
