NUCOR Buildings Group – West Shipping Warehouse Expansion

I. Summary
NBGW in Brigham City, Utah's storage and shipping capacity was at their limit. Due to this constraint, they could not accept more customers than their current maximum. Our team was tasked with developing and designing a warehouse expansion that would meet their current demands, as well as accommodate for potential future growth. Our team designed a steel warehouse expansion that would attach and blend in with the existing building near the current shipping area.

II. Alternatives
The following consists of material alternatives that were evaluated for the design of the project
Timber
Pros: Wood is a renewable resource.
Cons: Does not match the existing building. Transportation of materials will result in an increased carbon footprint.
Steel
Pros: Meets the aesthetic needs,capacity needs, and customer preferences.Steel can be manufactured at NBGW
Cons: Steel has a larger carbon footprint.
Concrete
Pros: Quick construction time. Durable, long lasting, and fire-resistant structure.
Cons: Most expensive alternative. Does not match the existing building
III. Criteria & Selection Process
All alternatives were evaluation with the following criteria:
- Shipping Capacity
- Tie-in to existing building
- Timeline
- Cost
- Sustainability
- Quality Impacts
Each alternative was rated on a scale of 0-2 for each criteria.

IV. Selected Alternative
Due to the specified criteria, the steel structure was the ideal alternative. Our team selected and designed a steel warehouse expansion. This structure blends in well with the existing infrastructure and connects directly to the existing facility, allowing for easy access from the existing warehouse.

This steel frame design produced in RISA shows the overall building structure and beam placement.
V. Final Design
The storage capacity of NBGW’s shipping warehouse effectively doubles with this addition. Our final design consists of calculations, sizing, and details for the overall structure, connections, roof, cladding, and foundation

The above graphs depict the bending moments about the z-axis of the moment frome of the structure and internal normal stress about the strong axis of the members of the moment frame. Data was graphed and calculated through RISA.
