DSAI Center Data Crunch N' Munch

Conference/Seminar

Hear a faculty member present an open DSAI problem and join the discussion. Stay afterward to socialize and connect! 15 min talk + 10 min Q&A + socializing Title: Magical Maps: Using statistics to make maps for building code requirements that everyone can live with Presenter: Dr. Brennan Bean from Mathematics and Statistics Dr. Bean uses spatial statistics and machine learning to map snow load requirements across the U.S. These maps can struggle in complex terrain (e.g., mountains, ski resorts) where snow varies at finer scales than available data. Let’s brainstorm ways to improve predictions in these high-stakes, data-scarce regions.

Military-Connected Students in Undergraduate Engineering Education: Who, When, Where, and Why We Should Care

Workshop/Training

Come join an interactive, student success-focused workshop to learn more about the unique experiences and strengths of a “hidden” population in undergraduate engineering education: military-connected students. We focus workshop discussion and activities toward the goal of improving outcomes among undergraduate military-connected students likely to enroll in engineering at USU, namely veterans and part-time service members in the Reserves or National Guard. Together, we will engage and reflect from two alternative viewpoints: one perspective centered on framing commonalities that exist among military-connected students as a whole—regardless of service branch, component, rank, or type; and another that challenges us to suspend personally-held perceptions and subjective interpretations and engage with military-connected students on an individual level. SPUDNUTS will be served!
